The Subsea Mechanical Rigging and Lifting Course, is an enhanced competence based training programme that teaches safe working techniques for use during underwater load handling and lifting operations. Its primarily a safety course and is aimed at Divers and Dive Supervisors to make them more safety aware and efficient, however it also teaches the correct application of a wide range of lifting appliances and accessories that are routinely used by divers in the subsea environment.
The five day course is run in its entirety in an indoor environment and utilises the PDA’s 4msw deep training tank. The first two days are split between class and workshop, where practical application of a wide variety of lifting equipment is carried out. Diving commences on day three, with two full days spent carrying out various underwater slinging, load manipulating and assembly techniques in the PDA’s dedicated indoor training tank. On the final day delegates will be assessed against the core safety requirements taught during the course whilst completing a complex assembly/disassembly work programme. This will require them to demonstrate safe lifting techniques using equipment such as underwater lift bags, tirfors, chain and lever hoists, snatch blocks, dead man anchors, strops, shackles, etc. Those who demonstrate theoretical knowledge through examination and practical knowledge through assessment, will receive our Stage 1 Certificate of Training Competence, which is valid for three (3) years.
(Note: Certificates issued pre-2015 are classed as stage 1)
Stage 1 – Training Competence Certificates:- Can be renewed prior to expiry, by undertaking a two (2) day practical refresher course.
Stage 2 – Workplace Competence Certificates:- Delegates with an in date Stage 1 certificate, that can demonstrate over the previous 3 years that they have underwater lifting experience covering at least 50 dives (5 which must involve the use of a crane) are eligible to undertake an enhanced two (2) day training and assessment programme to gain our stage 2 certificate. The stage 2 assessment involves passing a theoretical examination and practical test. The certificate can be used to demonstrate workplace competence through the combination of training, experience and external assessment. This certificate is valid for three (3) years.
Stage 3 – Workplace Competence Certificates:- Delegates with an in date Stage 2 certificate, that can demonstrate over the previous 3 years that they have underwater lifting experience covering at least 50 dives (5 which must involve the use of a crane) are eligible to undertake an enhanced two (2) day assessment programme to gain our stage 3 certificate. The stage 3 assessment involves passing a theoretical examination and practical test.
